From hawker-style street food to Michelin-starred restaurants, Singapore is a place where you’ll never go hungry. The choice can be overwhelming, so here’s our pick of a few to get you started.
Streets ahead
Local street fare is a delicious melting pot of Singapore’s diverse cultures. Last year, the first Michelin Guide to Singapore was released, with two humble street food stalls earning a star in the guide's highly coveted ranks: Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle in Chinatown Complex Market and Food Centre, and Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle. Singapore also made history for being the only place in the world where you can have a Michelin-starred meal for less than AUD$2.
Mod Sin
For Mod Sin (short for Modern Singaporean cuisine, a fusion of Western and local flavours) try Coriander Leaf in the historic Chijmes complex, once a convent and girl’s school. They also run cooking classes so you can learn to make your favourite creations.
If you believe ‘variety is the spice of life’, head to Thirteen Duxton Hill, which opened earlier this year in the foodie enclave of Duxton Hill. The daily changing menu here features 13 different dishes and drinks, depending on what the Aussie chef (of Restaurant Lume fame) buys from the market each day.
Fine dining
Treat yourself to a two-Michelin-star Modern French lunch at Odette, located in the National Gallery Singapore. For a one-of-a-kind gastronomic adventure try Labyrinth, an avant-garde fusion restaurant, which dishes up a spread of experimental creations inspired by local cuisines like the chilli crab ice cream.
Get a taste of your favourite celebrity chefs’ creations at Gordon Ramsay's Bread Street Kitchen, Tetsuya Wakuda's Waku Ghin, and Cut by Wolfgang Puck – all under one roof over at Marina Bay Sands. Joel Robuchon Restaurant at Resorts World Sentosa comes in top of the list with three Michelin stars.
Shop ‘til you drop
While you can’t go past the upscale department stores, name brand chain stores and luxury goods retailers of Orchard Road for shopping. Historic department stores Robinsons and TANGS, stock a variety of local designer gems such as Aijek, In Good Company, and Atelier Fang, which make handcrafted limited edition shoes. Head to ION Orchard, the jewel of Orchard Road, with a dizzying array of stores; and the newer Orchard Gateway, with its edgy homegrown stores like Superspace, and Actually.
Think shopping in Little India and only one name springs to mind: 10 Mustafa Centre. There’s no place quite like it; a 24-hour shopping behemoth selling just about anything under one roof. At Haji Lane in the Arab quarter you’ll find a one-of-a-kind goods ranging from clothes to home wares to souvenirs at Supermama.
