As soon as I stepped off the plane in Mozambique I knew that I was in for a treat, and every day of my holiday proved me right. I have stayed at many resorts in many villas over the years, but Anantara Bazaruto’s attention to detail ensures that its luxury villas take the cake.

Transfer
After being greeted at the airport Anantara guests are transferred 15 minutes through the streets of Vilankulo to the water, where the speed boat is waiting with drinks on ice. You may be lucky enough to see dolphins or dugongs swimming beside the boat on the 45 minute journey to Bazaruto Island, but taking in the gorgeous scenery as you cruise across the aquamarine waters is a treat in itself.
You arrive amidst crystal clear waters to a welcoming parade of singers and dancers, and it’s not long before they have another cold drink and a refreshing cool towel. Lunch is served immediately, and you are then shown to your private villa by a personal host.

Room and Grounds
When approaching my Beach Villa I could hardly believe it was meant for one party, but sure enough, each villa is spacious to a point of indulgence. As you approach via your private boardwalk, your host gives you information about the resort and the activities you can enjoy.
Once inside, you are shown through your gorgeous bedroom, walk-in dressing room, bathroom complete with giant sunken bathtub and both an indoor and outdoor shower, and an inviting sitting room. Glass doors open onto a private deck that offers views of the beach, and comfortable wicker chairs and an enticing hammock set the scene for total relaxation.

Food and Dining
There are four dining options at the resort and on my first night I enjoy a BBQ dinner at Clube Naval that has spoiled me for future BBQs. Dishes included freshly caught King Prawns in a delicious marinade, lamb shish kebabs, lobster salad and stuffed squid tubes.
The staff can’t do enough for you, and eagerly suggested a heavenly white wine to accompany my feast. Dessert is not to be missed, and the island’s private pastry chef gets upset if you don’t try at least one of his miraculous concoctions!
Breakfast offers a full array of Western delights, such as pancakes, waffles and omelettes all made to your liking right before your eyes. Platters of freshly sliced meat, cheese and fruit are nestled beside mouth-watering pastries.

Activities and Day Trips
The two-and-a-half hour cultural tour is a must. First we visited a freshwater lake which is teeming with wildlife including flamingos and Nile crocodiles; we were assured that the crocs never venture into the ocean! Next was a short walk up a sand dune for an incredible view and an exhilarating slide/walk down, and then it was time to meet some locals. The children at the local school offered us big, beautiful smiles and cheerful waves from their ‘schoolroom’, which outside in the shade of a giant tree.

Another day trip that is not to be missed is snorkelling on Paradise Island, and it is some of the best snorkelling I have ever experienced. The coral is vibrant and there is an amazing array of brightly coloured fish. Lunch is a BBQ prepared by our host, who provides way more gourmet food than is needed, followed by more tempting desserts. After lunch you visit the ruins of an old hotel and a Portuguese prison before heading back to Bazaruto.

Day Spa
The spa is located at the highest peak of the resort, and you are ferried by golf buggy to your appointment. I chose a Coconut and Mint Scrub followed by a 60-minute massage and it may have been the best two hours of my life.
The treatment rooms have incredible views, and every minute of your appointment is enhanced by luxury details that have you floating out of the spa on cloud nine.

Last Words
My overall rating is 10/10 and I will definitely be back! Next time I will upgrade to a Deluxe Pool Villa for the incredible views.
